You will find learning easy and exciting in our six-course, 150 hour Human Sciences curriculum, as you use your vision, hearing, and hands-on and internal experience to discover the human body in all its beauty and mystery. Our anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and pathology classes are tailored to massage and bodywork applications. You’ll begin with Musculoskeletal Anatomy, which introduces the student to the bones, muscles, and joints of the human body. Anatomy & Physiology 1, 2 & 3 begin at the most basic level of cell biology and continue through increasing levels of complexity to the structures & functions of the body systems. The series concludes with the Kinesiology and Pathology classes, described below. |

Kinesiology is the study of human movement. Massage therapists use kinesiology as a tool to assess musculoskeletal pain and injury and to perform postural analysis. Kinesiology is the foundation for applying range of motion and remedial stretches, along with rehabilitation exercises. This course is an in-depth examination of the origins, insertions and actions of the muscles, and how muscles and joints work together to create the dynamics of movement. Common dysfunctions associated with the knee, hip, sacroiliac, and the joints of the spine will be explored. |

Massage Theory and Technique is an introduction to therapeutic massage and provides a foundation for continued study. You will learn massage theory, benefits and contraindications, appropriate qualities of touch and presence, proper body mechanics, hand care and self-care, plus the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual benefits of massage for both yourself and your clients. In addition to Swedish massage, the course includes lymphatic drainage techniques, Polarity Therapy sequences, and how to integrate complementary techniques to evolve your own unique style of bodywork. This class includes a weekly supervised practice session as well as daily hands-on practice giving and receiving the work in class. Conditions and diseases commonly presented by clients are covered in this class. Massage indications and contraindications are addressed, along with responsible referral practices. For certain conditions, suggestions concerning appropriate techniques are offered. The risk factors and mechanisms contributing to disease are explored and discussed. Much of the course will focus on pathologies of the musculoskeletal system. |

Our Professional Development classes train you to market your services, build your own practice and find your perfect work situation. You will learn practical, tried-and-true methods for success, prosperity, and creating the career you want. You will also learn client care and professional service. Conscious Communication Skills is designed to develop the effective counseling and communication skills necessary in the therapeutic setting, and teach you how to apply these skills to your bodywork sessions. Therapeutic and Professional Skills lays the groundwork for developing the skills you will use every day in your practice as well as how to handle ethical issues and unusual situations with clients. Successful Business Practices will give you the practical information needed to successfully work as a therapist. During your last quarter, the Clinical Practicum will prepare you for managing a professional massage practice, both through your own small supervised massage practice and through participation in the weekly Heartwood Student Clinic, which draws clients from Heartwood and the surrounding area. |

In our bodywork classes, you will receive specific coaching and personalized attention, and the kind of training that can only be delivered by master instructors. Practice both in class and in weekly supervised sessions help you perfect your skills. These programs will also help you develop the ability to recognize and respond to the needs of the whole person (body, mind and spirit) on their path of healing. Subjects include Shiatsu Acupressure, Deep Tissue Therapy, Polarity Therapy, Cranial Sacral Therapy, Exercise Therapy, Hydrotherapy, BodyMind Integrative Techniques, and other adjunct therapies. Therapeutic Massage and
Bodywork
(NCBTMB) as a Continuing
Education Provider A. Heartwood
also offers the Massage and
Bodywork Therapist Program, an
opportunity to complete a 570-hour
certification program through
intensives. The Massage and
Bodywork Therapist Program is

Our campus is set on 200 rustic,
serene acres filled with forests,
rolling meadows, organic gardens
and orchards, and miles of hiking
trails. The facilities include 4
classrooms, 3 dormitories, a
strawbale meditation temple, and
a
communal lodge and dining hall.

large swimming pool, wood-fired
sauna and outdoor hot tub look out
over magnificent views. A library,
study hall, offices and campus
store
complete our village environment. |

Heartwood offers a payment plan to assist students in meeting their financial obligations. Students may pay the fees for each quarter at the beginning of that quarter. Payment of all fees for the first quarter is due at registration. Students may not attend classes until fees for the quarter are paid.
