AMTA Advocates for Statewide Licensure in California
On March 24, the California Assembly Business and Professions Committee, along with the Senate Business, Professions, and Economic Development Committee, held a joint sunset hearing to discuss the future of the California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC). This hearing was a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to establish statewide licensure for massage therapists in California.
During the hearing, 12 individuals testified against CAMTC, advocating for a transition to licensure that would:
- Establish a uniform standard of practice
- Strengthen educational requirements
- Enhance practitioner and public safety
AMTA has been actively working to advance practice standards for massage therapists. We believe that massage therapists play an essential role in healthcare and wellness, and that licensure is vital for protecting both practitioners and the public.
AMTA strongly supported licensure at the hearing, emphasizing the importance of California joining the 45 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico that already require licensure for massage therapy.
As this process continues, we encourage all members to stay informed and actively participate in shaping the future of the massage therapy profession in California.
Thank you for your continued support in advancing our profession. Please reach out to the AMTA Government Relations Team with any questions or concerns.
