Types of Liability Coverage

Professional liability insurance policies for massage therapists provide either claims-made or occurrence coverage.

Claims-made policies provide coverage for incidents that:

  • Occur on or after the effective date of the policy through the date the policy is terminated
  • Are reported to the insurance company while the policy is still active (or during a purchased tail policy)

With occurrence policies, coverage is triggered if the incident occurs during the policy period—regardless of when the claim is filed or whether the policy is still in effect. That means it provides long-term protection for covered claims which may arise at any time in the future, up to the limits of the policy in force at the time of the incident that led to the claim.

The professional liability insurance provided by your AMTA professional membership is an occurrence policy. Because this is an occurrence policy, you're protected regardless of when a claim is made, as long as your membership and this insurance were in place at the time of the covered incident.

As an AMTA member, you can work confidently knowing you're protected by one of the broadest professional liability insurance programs in the profession.
